In 2003, US Airways was under new management, David Siegel, which was seeing some light at the end of the tunnel. It emerged earlier than thought from bankruptcy, made a huge RJ order, introduced a new strategy, consumated an alliance with United, and improved its labor relations markedly. Not bad for an airline most thought would be the first to perish following the attrocities of September 11th. In May 2005, America West and US Airways announced a merger to form a new lower nationwide airline. America West management was the controlling party, with headquaters in Phoenix. However, the more well known and geographically encompassing US Airways name survived. Hubs are in Phoenix, Las Vegas, Philadelphia, and Charlotte with focus cities of Fort Lauderdale, Washington D.C., and Pittsburgh. The Ft. Lauderdale focus city, seen here, has largely been scaled back. In 2006, US attempted a takeover of Delta just emerging from bankruptcy, but that hostile action failed. However, under brilliant CEO Doug Parker, US has, like a Phoenix, risen from the ashes.
