Spirit was founded in 1992 in Detroit to service predominantly the U.S. automakers from the Downtown Airport. It originally operated with DC-9s, adding MD-80s to the fleet. Spirit shifted its strategy to a leisure airline and relocated corporate headquarters to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.
