Just as Lockheed discontinued the Tri-Star and Pan Am was absorbing the incompatible National DC-10's, National acquired L-1011-500s. The 500s were great airplanes in their day, especially on the long thin routes they were designed for, but their incompatibility and maintenance intensive schedules meant they were doomed for the start. By the late 80s they were replaced by the A-310s.
