Northwest had joined SkyTeam, thus Continental and Delta routes are included on its route map. From 2005-07 it was in bankruptcy, entering within days of Delta. In 2008, Delta and Northwest would announce a merger creating the world's largest airline. Delta would be the surviving carrier with the Northwest name and Twin Cities headquarters disappearing after 80 years. Initially the merger parties claimed there would be limited loss in service and no hub closings, but with the unprecedented Oil Shock of 2008 these 2 airlines were caught in a difficult position as their every move is being watched by the DOJ who would approve the merger. At this point, secondary hubs at Memphis (NW) and Delta (Cincinnati) would appear to be in danger. Continental, which Northwest had a minority stake in, pulled out of the alliance and began its own talks at the time of the merger. Northwest would be the first U.S. carrier to order the Airbus A350 but now those orders must be in doubt as Delta is anti-Airbus.
