In January 1970 with this schedule, National was scheduled to become only the 3rd airline after Pan Am and TWA awarded flights to Europe. Service to London Heathrow actually commenced in June 1970. Until NA's takeover by Pan Am in 1980, this was up until 2008, an unduplicated instance of 3 U.S. carriers serving Heathrow regularly. Before the delivery of 747s, National started the services with two leased DC-8-54s. Also in 1969, National opened its Sundrome terminal at New York JFK. The terminal is now used by Jet Blue.
