Varig is one of the oldest airlines in Latin America, and also one of the most troubled. Brazil has always been one of the world's most competitive domestic markets, owing to its geographic size, large population, and number of domestic airlines. In the late 90s/early 00s, TAM began to skim the high-end of the market and Gol, the low end causing Trans Brazil to collapse, and VASP and VARIG to enter severe financial convulsions. Both are much smaller players currently than in this 1993 schedule.
