Hawaiian was replacing it's leased American DC-10s with Boeing 767-300s in 2002. Boeing 717's came into the fleet beginning in 2000 replacing the DC-9-50's which first joined in 1975. The beautiful, new "Pualani" image was introduced with arrival of the 717s. Schedules extended to Japan, Australia, and New Zealand at this point. Hawaiian and Aloha would undergo severe competitive pressure from Mesa owned Go! Airlines in 2006. Aloha would succumb to the slowing economy, predatory market competition, and high fuel prices in March, 2008. Hawaiian would fly on in a weakened position but takeover some of Aloha's mainland routes, including Oakland to Honolulu.
