Founded in 1946, Alitalia operates worldwide with a modern Airbus and Boeing fleet. For years, it was the picture of financial stability but new low cost competition and a weakened home market has driven it close to bankruptcy. Easy Jet went so far as to paint one of its jets with the phrase "Arrivederci Alitalia". Alitalia features classic paintings from Roman artists on its cover-a nice touch.
