Air France is Europe's 2nd largest airline in 2003 behind British Airways. With a now "borderless" Europe economically speaking, there have been many discussions with Alitalia regarding some form of merger or alliance.Until recently, Air France enjoyed little low cost carrier competition, with the failure of Air Lib. Easy Jet and Ryan Air have now made inroads in the market reducing Air France's profitability. Despite its largely government ownership, Airbus continues to operate large numbers of Boeing equipment including recent orders for the 777. Air France will be one of the first customers for the A380 SuperJumbo. In 2004, Air France and KLM consimated a merger yet retaining distinctive brands and operations. This is the last timetable with Concorde service as Air France grounded them permanently in May 2003.
