Delta absorbed Western Airlines on April 1, 1987. Again, Delta operated DC-10s side by side with the TriStars gaining the 10s from Western. Delta gained an extensive West Coast system including Mexico, British Columbia, and the Salt Lake City hub. Tokyo service from Portland was added in March; Seoul and Bangkok were added in December. Delta was the launch customer of the MD-88 in the 1987 as well. In the last few years, Delta had also added Munich and Shannon, Ireland. The Asian routes, with the exception of Tokyo (now from LAX and Atlanta) as well as Mexico have all been abandoned since. By airline merger standards, this one went smoothly though Delta suffered operational and safety issues during this period that were widely publicized in the press.
