Northeast operated as a going concern from 1931-1972. It began as a small New England based carrier and grew to an modern second tier carrier beginning with Viscounts in the late 1950s, Convair 880s in 1960, DC-9s in 1965, and 727s in 1967s. It boasted far flung routes to Florida, Bermuda and Los Angeles. Even with the purchase by Storer Broadcasting, the fleet renewal of the 1960s, the Yellowbird rebranding, and a great reputation, NE was rarely profitable and was taken over by Delta in 1972.
