By 1997 Continental had risen to the top of profitability, employee morale, and customer satisfaction under the leadership of Gordon Berthune. Continental's route map spanned Asia, South America, Europe, and the U.S. from hubs in Newark and Cleveland. The Denver hub had been wound down in 1994 before the opening of the new Denver International Airport.
