The early 90's were difficult times for Aloha, even though it was gaining on weakening rival Hawaiian's inter-island market share. An economic meltdown in Japan, the Gulf War effect's on tourism, and Hurricane Iniki in 1992 were all catalysts for declining traffic at Aloha. 737-400s were ordered to begin replacing the vintage 737-200 classics. Do to cash flow problems, only 2 examples would enter the fleet before being sold after 2 years. The airline would enter bankruptcy twice before finally liquidating in 1991.
