Delta operated Boeing 747s in the early 1970s until its L1011s arrived. The 747s were used on short-haul runs such as Dallas-Atlanta and Chicago-Miami. They were ill-suited for these routes and left the fleet by 1975. 747s wouldn't be seen again in DL colors until the 2008 merger with Northwest.
