Miami International Airport - early 1960

Miami International Airport - early 1960

These rare images from the early 1960s show Miami International just after the February opening of the NW20th St Terminal. At its opening in 1959 and for years after, MIA was the world´s largest single terminal. The basic finger concourse layout emanating from a Central Terminal Building remains remarkably intact to this day. The CTB and hotel topping it are still visible today. All the concourse have been replaced or massively altered with the exception of parts of G which are still visible today. The first substantial changes would be the Flamingo and Dolphin parking garages, and the new Midfield Terminal E in the early to mid 1970s. Eastern dominated the North concourse, Pan Am was in the middle, while Miami based National planes can be seen in the 4th finger. Delta is still to this day found on the south part of the terminal. Checkout my article on MIA´s 50th Anniversary of the 1959 CTB coming in late 2009/10.
