Often times the Russians were ahead of the west at least in the early stages before the West would catch up and surpass the East. Examples of this include the first spacecraft into Orbit, the commercial SST, and the first regional jetliner, the Yak-42. This aircraft dates back to the 1960s and is still ubiquitous throughout the former USSR.
