IL-86

The IL-86 was designed to replace the IL-62 as the USSR's first widebody aircraft. It was designed to enter service in 1980 to coincide with the Moscow Olympics. Its thirst and very limited range made it a dissapointment to Aeroflot and gave it very little export appeal even in the East. This was due principally to the lack of modern turbofan engines. An interesting feature, though is the lower level air stairs for self-contained ground boarding. Passengers would board through the lower level stairs with their baggage (everyting was carry-on!)in hand for storage in the baggage hold.
