The 11,130 foot departure runway 13 juts out into Victoria Bay was last expanded in 1970 when widebodies began service. Due to high traffic, arriving aircraft generally used full thrust reversers and breaks to escape the runway as quick as possible for following traffic. A 3 month old China Airlines 747-400 landing in severe cross winds flew off the end of the runway in 1993.
