Charlotte Douglas International Airport in Charlotte, NC is USAirways top hub. CLT became Piedmont's hub in the early 1980s which drove the city to open the beginnings of the current terminal in 1982. When USAir took over Piedmont in the late 1980s, CLT service only increased. Even with the reverse acquisition of USAirways by America West, CLT has gone from strength to strength surpassing Philadelphia as the #1 hub. Philadelphia still is the airline's international hub, but international service at CLT continues to be strong. Piedmont launched the first London flights back in 1986. British Airways followed with London service in the early 1990s when BA had a stake in US. Lufthansa is the only European character operating here. CLT is so dominated by USAirways that Southwest doesn't server the airport. JetBlue and AirTran have limited flights. Still, in 2007 CLT was the fastest growing airport in the U.S.
The terminal is divided into 4 concourses: A (most airlines except USAirways), B (USAirways), C (USAirways), the impressive D (International), and E (USAirways Express). It has a very impressive shopping mezzanine on Airside that opened in the mid 1990s. It is reminiscent of United's terminal at Chicago O'Hare.
