Berlin Tegel Airport is currently the primary airport serving Berlin. Berlin's other commercial airports are Schönefeld, located in the former Eastern sector primarily serves LCCs for now and the historic Tempelhof which closed in 2008. Tegel opened in 1960 at the dawn of the jet age as Tempelhof's runways were too short to accommodate the first generation jets. Air France and Pan Am were the first 2 airlines to serve TXL. Lufthansa wouldn't serve TXL until German reunification in 1990, taking over Pan Am's famed IGS service. Tegel Airport is well know for its unique hexagon shapred terminal building around an open square, which makes for walking distances as short as 30 m (98 ft) from the aircraft to the terminal exit. It is scheduled to close in 2012, six months after the completion of the new Berlin-Brandenburg International Airport that will handle all commercial flights to and from Berlin, despite its considerable distance from Central Berlin. BBI is located adjacent to Schönefeld. Tegel Airport is the hub for German LCC Air Berlin, and is also a major city for Lufthansa.
