Beijing Capital Terminal 2 Ramp - 2009

Beijing Airport opened in 1958. As China began to open to the rest of the world, a newer, larger terminal with a satellite rotunda opened on January 1, 1980. The terminal was larger than the one in the 1950s, but by the mid-1990s, it was too small. A new terminal opened in 1999 and was renamed Terminal 2. Terminal 1 was closed and replaced with a new Terminal 1 for a few airlines, including China Southern Airlines' domestic and international flights from Beijing. Other airlines' domestic and international flights still operate in Terminal 2. Terminal 3 opened just in time for the 2008 Beijing Olympics as the largest manmade structure in the world. Dubai's new terminal eclipsed it later in 2008. It is some 5 times the size of London Heathrow's new Terminal 5. It is larger than all 3 LHR terminals combined as well. Foster & Partners, The same architectural firm behind LHR T5 is responsible for PEK T3. Chinese flagship carrier Air China is headquartered at Beijing Capital though China Southern and China Eastern have large operations here. Air China has moved to Terminal 3.
