Athens International Airport is one of the newest airports in Europe, opening on March 29, 2001. This rather utilitarian airport replaced the now-closed Athens (Ellinikon) International Airport. Like Hong Kong's CLK and Kai Tak, the closing of the old airport and opening of the new airport occurred in a matter of days. Athens International Airport is the major hub and base for Olympic Airline and Aegean Airlines. It was named after the Greek politician Eleftherios Venizelos. By world standards, it was built rather inexpensively and is rather short on frills. It has has two terminal buildings, the Main Terminal and the Satellite Terminal. All check-in desks are located in the Main Terminal, and the Satellite terminal is easily accessible through an underground link complete with moving walkways.
